Artist: Mercyful Fate
Title: Curse Of The Pharaohs
Label: Satan’s Nightmare
So it’s been a lot of Mercyful Fate updates here this week, but it’s also one of my absolute favourite bands so i guess i will be posting more records with them here later on. I am not really sure about the year of release of this record, as it says nothing on the actual vinyl, i just find the information that it was supposedly released back in 1984. Also i have seen it been labelled a “fan club release” and a bootleg, im not sure wich one is right.
As the last Mercyful Fate album i posted (see a few post further down) this vinyl includes early Mercyful Fate demos, some on this album you can also find on the official Return Of The Vampire Lp but not all of them. And like i said in that post, it’s always fun to hear the early stuff from the bands that you love. Anyway i strongly recommend that you pick this vinyl up if you find it, it sound really good and the front cover have a really cool early bandphoto with a King Diamond not wearing his make-up.
Side A: Curse of the pharaohs, Return of the vampire, Corpse without a soul, Burning the cross, Walking back to hell
Side B: Running free, Black masses, Hard rocker, Combat zone, Love criminals, Mission destroy aliens
Artist: Mercyful Fate
Title: Return Of The Vampire
Return Of The Vampire (the rare and unreleased) is a compilation of old Mercyful Fate recordings, some previous unreleased and some demos of already released songs. The compilation was released back in 1992 on Cd and Vinyl, the vinyl is limited to only 1000 copies and is a nice collectible amongs Mercyful Fate fans today.
The first five track are from the bands 1981 demo, “Death kiss” is an unreleased demosong for the album Don´t Break The Oath, a track that was included as a bonus when the album was remastered and rereleased back in 1997, the last three songs are also unreleased demos but i don’t know from what timeperiod. The song “M.D.A” wich stands for Mission Destroy Aliens are by far the worst piece of crap lyrics this band have ever written, and i can honestly understand why this song never got included on any album and well, “M.D.A” isnt actually a Mercyful Fate song either, it was recorded with Michael Denner’s band Danger Zone wich King Diamond did some vocals right before they changed into Mercyful Fate, as far as the other songs they are really good and hold the same standard as all the early Mercyful Fate stuff, some of the songs also did end up on their albums. “Curse of the pharaos” and “A coprse without a soul” did make it to the bands debut EP Nuns Have No Fun and “Return of the vampire” ended up several years later (1996) on the album In The Shadows, the version on that album features Lars Ulrich of Metallica on drums.
I just LOVE compilations like this from bands that i like for a few reasons, one obvious is that you get previous unreleased tracks, just there and then you got me sold! If it’s a band that i like i just got the have all the songs the band have recorded, even if it’s a horrible sounded rehearsal track recorded in the basement, GOTTA HAVE IT! Another reason i like these kind of compilations is that on the demotracks you can hear the bands first steps into becoming what they became, the first small babysteps into what made whatever band it might be into the band that i love so much. A great journey to follow and listen to the advancements that they make. For the same reason i like early liverecordings (live bootlegs) of different bands.
Side A: Burning the cross, Curse of the pharaos, Return of the vampire, On a night of full moon
Side B: A corpse without soul, Death kiss, Leave my soul alone, M.D.A, You asked for it
In this “Video of the week” i pay tribute to Danish metalband Mercyful Fate with the song “Witches Dance” from their fourth studioalbum Time.
Artist: Witches Coven
Title: Fire Signs
Witches Coven is a new an upcoming band from Umeå Sweden who play classic heavy metal highly influential by Mercyful Fate, there are alot of these kind of bands coming nowadays with occult theme and influences from 70’s psych and early Heavy Metal, the best ones i think are In Solitude and Portrait. Witches Coven are not near the same quality as those bands, but with time who knows?
This is a three track demo wich you can listen to for free on the bands MySpace page, it’s nothing wrong with the music it’s the singer i think is the biggest problem, i would like more high pitch in the vocals for this kind of music. But still it was a joy to check out the bands demo. My favourite of the demo would be the title track, wich start’s off with a dark and gloomy into.
Listen to it here: Witches Coven on MySpace

King Diamond who have been on hiatus for several years now after undergoing triple bypass heart surgery and having back issues have now teamed up with ICM and The Agency Group, a booking agency so it seems that King Diamond have plans to hit the roads again.
Hopefully we can also see the light of day of a new King Diamond solo album, or another Mercyful Fate album since a almost complete line-up of Mercyful Fate joined Metallica on stage some weeks ago to celebrate “30 years of Metallica”.
Here is an official statement from King‘s facebook
It has just been confirmed that King Diamond has joined forces with Nick Storch at ICM and Paul Ryan at The Agency Group.
Nick Storch will be in charge of booking King Diamond concerts in North and South America, and Paul Ryan will be in charge of booking King Diamond concerts in Europe and Rest of World.
“It is great to be in the top professional hands of Nick and Paul. They both come highly recommended by Brian Slagel of Metal Blade, who personally suggested the partnership that is now in effect. ICM and The Agency Group have so much combined experience, which will open new doors for us. When it comes to getting us back on stage again, we all agree on how to bring King Diamond to a whole new level. Within a few weeks, we should be able to announce the first part of our plan.
WELCOME ON BOARD AND STAY HEAVY.” – King
King Diamond adds: “There’ll be a lot more great news coming the next couple of weeks. It’s been difficult keeping everything under wraps, but soon it will all be out in the open. I want to thank you for your amazing patience. We will get back to the Skype sessions in not too long as well.”
