Not only bad things happens on Friday the 13th, for example this piece of metal history arrived today. I guess that most of you who are into this kind of music i write about on my blog are familiar with this compilation, it was put together by Brian Slagel for the Metal Blade Records label, a release on where he was gonna put on a few upcoming unsigned bands he liked, he also asked his friend Lars Ulrich if his band had any songs cos he had a spot open on the compilation. Lars band in this case was Metallica an unknown band (more or less they didn’t even exist yet when Lars accepted to be on the record) who went in and recorded their first song ever for this Lp, and they got the last track on the compilation, an early version of “Hit the lights” saw the light of day, a version wich is way more raw than the more common No Life Til Leather demo version.
Said and done, Metallica got their song on the record, the bandnamed was even misspelled on this first release, it’s spelled Mettallica. The first pressing sold out pretty fast and when it was time to make another pressing they spelled Metallica right and they also took out the early version of “Hit the lights” and replaced it with the No Life Til Leather Demo version of the song, a version wich is a bit more polished and well sounding. Another thing that differs this original press from the second one is that Ratt is featured with the song “Tell the world” that was cut out on the second pressings, i don’t know why but my guess is that Ratt got a record deal and released a MiniLP about the time for the re-issue and that song was featured there.
Other than the fact Metallica did include their very first recording on this vinyl i think it’s a really good compilation and if you don’t feel like spending a bit of money on the vinyl versions they are also available on Cd. Other than Metallica and Ratt i think you should check out Malice and Cirith Ungol, also really good bands.
