Hellhammer released three demos and one mini album Apocalyptic Raids (you can read about it a few blogpost down) in their short career spanning from 1982 to 1984. On this tripple Lp set Century Media have collected and remastered the bands three demos from it’s analog masters. The vinyl is released on 180g heavy weight quality in a nice gatefold cover with poster and a 36page booklet where you can read about the band’s history as well as comments about all the songs, it’s very interesting, and it also have tons of great photos of the band. This was a limited release wich sold out fairly quick, it was also available on cd in two different versions, i think both of them are still up for grabs. The coverart is simply beautiful and reminds alot of the cover of the Apocalyptic Raids album.
The fun thing about Tom G Warrior and Hellhammer is that a few years back he said in interview how much he hated Hellhammer and all the recordings they did, he also said he burnt alot of original photos and recordings. Luckily he made peace with his past, i doubt that we would have seen a release like this if he wouldnt have. This was sometime before the release of Celtic Frost album Monotheist if i remember correctly.
Anyway, back to the album itself, on the first Lp you have the Death Fiend Demo from June 1983 and it sound very good. Okey, as good as it gets with Hellhammer measurment, because this was never a well sounding band, more like noises of hell. On the second Lp you find Triumph of death Demo from June 1983 and on the third Lp the Satanic Rites Demo from December 1983 and it’s the same here, very good remasters of the tracks. I have had these demos on various bootleg Lp’s before this release and i would say they never sounded this good. And when you hear the demos back to back like this you can clearly hear how the band evolved, from the first demo where you easily can hear the bands NWOBHM influences to the more dark and doomy sound they had on the Satanic Rites demo for example. After the band broke up back in 1984, since they felt they couldnt take the band any further and to get a clean slate and start over since the musicpress wasent too amused by the band, Tom and Martin went on to form Celtic Frost, but that’s a different story…
